Video: High-Flying Skiers Flee Man-Made Avalanche

It?s not often you find yourself in a situation thousands of feet above the French Alps, with a parachute strapped to your back, and you?re supposed to intentionally start an avalanche.

Well, extreme skiers Matthias Giraud and Stefan Laude are living a more adventurous life than you or I, as that?s exactly what they got to do recently.

Yes, it?s basically a commercial for GoPro?s head-mounted HD camera rigs, which filmed the entire event from both Giraud and Laude?s perspectives, but that bit of commercialism doesn?t make the jump any less death-defying. (Although, the mere fact that we have the video proves they made the jump without injury, so that should take some of the drama out of it.)

As you might expect, you?re going to want to go full screen on this one. It?s all pretty tame at the start, with Giraud and Laude poking at the snow with their poles, but when they leap off the rock face a minute in and start parachuting over the snow-covered valley, that?s when you should expect to find your stomach nestled snugly in your throat.

And when they both turn around to catch a glimpse of the raging avalanche behind them, well, just make sure you?re sitting down.
