Al Pacino's daughter arrested for drunken driving (omg!)

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The 21-year-old daughter of actor Al Pacino was arrested in Manhattan for driving while intoxicated, police said on Sunday.

Julie Pacino was arrested shortly around 1:30 a.m. at a DUI (driving under the influence of alcohol) checkpoint on the border of the Soho and West Village neighborhoods. She was later arraigned and released on her own recognizance, New York Police Department spokesman James Duffy said.

Her exact blood-alcohol level was not immediately available, but People magazine quoted Duffy as saying "She had bloodshot, watery eyes, slurred speech and the strong smell of alcohol on her breath," and admitted to drinking three beers and smoking marijuana prior to entering the checkpoint.

After learning of the arrest, Al Pacino, a multi-Oscar nominee who won best actor for "Scent of a Woman," rushed back from Los Angeles where he has been filming a biopic on music producer Phil Spector.

The daughter of Pacino and acting coach Jan Tarrant, Julie Pacino attended UCLA, where she was a member of the softball team.

Tips about Moving and Relocation | Home Loans

Moves today are not what they were an era or 2 ago, when most of us had lesser possessions (and fewer kinds of properties). Currently, we have to consider not only how to get our clothes, textbooks, housewares as well as children?s toys from here to there, however we are also concerned about how to load up computers and big-screen Television sets and how you can move 3 cars (having only 2 family drivers), exotic plants, and our black Lab and African gray parrot.

The response to these complicated necessities has become a staggering increase in the varieties of information and services all set from skilled movers. The pre-moving packet given to you by a van line could well include advice concerning how to make the transfer less complicated for your kids and how to prepare your family pet for air or road travel to its brand new home as well as a Web site address where you can get information regarding determining the price of your move yourself. These expert services, along with the more traditional services movers still offer may also include packing with materials created specifically for each and every kind of item. They could also do a stock list of your products.

Where to start

Since lots of movers have to be scheduled at least thirty days ahead of an actual transferring date, you must begin to look into Chicago Movers as soon as you acknowledge you?ll be relocating. The summer months and the 1st and final days of each month are usually peak moving times. Real estate agents, family and friends who have lately moved, and state movers associations can furnish names of trustworthy movers. It?s smart to drop by the mover?s business establishment by surprise to ensure that the company?s building and equipments are clean and well-maintained, especially when your furnishings would be stored. Employees also must be neat and clean. Whenever you can follow them dealing with somebody else?s transfer, you may get a fair concept with regards to how they might deal with yours.

Nearly all agents of national or regional van lines solely own their companies, manage their own businesses, and are accountable for what comes about on the moves they carry on. Check carefully the company you plan to use and don?t count on Chicago Moving Company name.

Any move entails numerous moving professionals, including the Chicago Movers who helps make the records to get your move moving; the origin agent who actually packs up your home; the transporting agent who actually moves your goods; and the destination agent who unloads your stuff.

Do not hire a mover who can?t provide a business home address. There are several fly-by-night movers whose workplaces are their vans. If something fails with your transfer, how do you find the mover who does not have a business address?

Class Action Claims Online Legal Forms Pose Threat To Consumers ...

There is a Missouri class action set for trial next month, which is worth following.

The case claims that LegalZoom.com, which sells do-it-yourself wills, leases and other documents online, is illegally practicing law in the state of Missouri.

Last week, Missouri federal judge Nanette K. Laughrey partially rejected LegalZoom?s motion for summary judgment and set the case for trial on August 22.

In a statement issued yesterday, LegalZoom said that if the plaintiffs win at trial, it could dramatically impact the? availability of self-help legal books and forms in Missouri.

?If the plaintiffs are successful, we believe it is going to become a lot more expensive for small businesses and individuals to obtain basic legal forms,? Chas Rampenthal, Legal Zoom?s General counsel, said in the statement. ?Missouri would become the only state in the nation to take away a consumer?s right to access online legal document software.?

The LawBlog today talked to David Butsch, counsel to the plaintiffs? class, which, he said, consists of as many as 15,000 users of LegalZoom products.

The suit contends that by selling online legal documents, LegalZoom is violating a Missouri law that bars non-lawyers from preparing legal documents.

?The state licensure of attorneys was established to protect the public from those untrained and uneducated in the practice of law,? Butsch said. The preparation of wills and other legal documents ?may seem simple to a layman, but they aren?t,? he added. ?There are consequences of signing a will . . .and those consequences can be great and they can?t be properly communicated by a company over the internet.?

We asked Butsch about the concern that many have voiced that legal services are cost prohibitive to many consumers, a problem that has likely become even more acute in recent years.

Aren?t online legal documents, however crude, preferable to having folks go without any form of legal guidance? In response, Butsch noted that there is now a glut of legal talent in the market, with many law graduates unable to find full-time employment. That fact, he said, has made customized legal help from practicing lawyers increasingly affordable. ?I know quite a few lawyers who offer a quality legal service at very good rates,? he said.

A different beast entirely

A different beast entirely

A group of researchers at University of California at Berkeley have proposed a radical new theory that would cast most everything we know about cancer in a new light. While scientists have for years believed that the disease was the result of our own DNA run amok, the truth might be much weirder -- that cancer is, maybe, its own separate species.

The science is complex, but it boils down to a shift in thinking about the way in which cancer is born. For years, scientists have believed that the disease begins when a few mutated genes give rise to renegade body cells that multiply beyond control. But the Berkeley team, led by Dr. Peter Duesberg, argues that cancers are actually born from entire chromosomes, the long bands of genetic material that house our genes. What occurs is a process called aneuploidy, in which "disruptions" in chromosomes cause perversions of our genetic material, which can multiply during cell division. As a result, our DNA is rendered nearly unrecognizable.

According to PhysOrg.com:?

Normally this would be a death sentence for a cell, but in rare cases, [Duesberg] said, such disrupted chromosomes might be able to divide further, perpetuating and compounding the damage. Over decades, continued cell division would produce many unviable cells as well as a few still able to divide autonomously and seed cancer.

The genetic makeup of the cancerous cells, because of aneuploidy, bears strikingly little resemblance to our original DNA. However, the cancer still shows "relatively stable chromosomal patterns." Those patterns are called karyotypes, and are a hallmark of living organisms.

[Duesberg] and his colleagues analyzed several cancers, clearly demonstrating that the karyotype is amazingly similar in all cells of a specific cancer line, yet totally different from the karyotypes of other cancers and even the same type of cancer from a different patient.

Translation: Each different case of cancer is a unique, parasitic species. And these species are flexible, adaptable, immortal and autonomous -- as long as the host survives, of course.

In a press release, Duesberg said:

Cancer is comparable to a bacterial level of complexity, but still autonomous, that is, it doesn?t depend on other cells for survival; it doesn?t follow orders like other cells in the body, and it can grow where, when and how it likes. That?s what species are all about ... Once a cell has crossed that barrier of autonomy, it?s a new species.

What's the point of all this hypothesizing, though? What are the possible benefits? Duesberg argues that gene therapy -- which attempts to prevent the genetic mutations that many believe cause cancer -- has been ineffective because it doesn't deal with the central problem of aneuploidy. Remember that in the Berkeley theory, chromosomes themselves mutate with a very low success rate, until they reach a stable karyotype, causing cancer. It could be that a treatment that budged cancer cells off from their stable genetic footing, urged them to keep reconfiguring and evolving, would be significantly more successful in curing patients of the disease rather than current treatment.

Obama Relief Plan: Debt Relief Plan

The current economic state has forced people out of their jobs and has disturbed their mental state. People have not been able to pay of the bills of credit on time and due to their inability to pay; many creditors had started defaulting. When creditors started defaulting; they stopped lending further money which halted the economic growth of America. President Obama and the private sector took notice of this situation and for the well being of the public of America they announced Obama debt relief plan. The Obama relief plan focused on helping people get out of liability issues and to stabilize the economy.

The federal government was even aware of the fact that insolvency has played a major role in defaulting lenders and disturbing the flourishing economic state. This is why new liability relief programs were formatted. One of the most popular relief programs was liability settlement. This program was made to discourage people from insolvency and to help those people who were on the verge of bankruptcy and had no money to repay their liability amount. There were certain changes in the rules of insolvency due to which people were not able to file insolvency.

Debt settlement is a liability reduction plus elimination process. Through this program; anybody who has to pay back more than $10,000 to their lenders can gain relief through negotiations. Negotiations take place between the negotiation company hired by the debtor and the creditors. The negotiation companies use their tactics to break down the creditors and they strive hard to gain a huge reduction in the amount of loan their clients have borrowed. They even work hard to lower the interest rate their client is being charged for the repayment of the loan amount and to increase the tenure their clients were provided to repay the remaining borrowed amount.

Before hiring any financial firm to assist you, you must do some research about their efficiency and credibility. You must seek their track record so that you cannot be cheated by them. You can consult your financial adviser and especially, you must seek advice of the debt relief networks because credible debt relief firms are always affiliated by these debt relief networks. There is no doubt that this Debt Relief Plan can enable you to get rid of your credit card debt and start living a debt free life.

If you have over $10k in unsecured debt it could be a wise financial decision to consider debt negotiation. Due to the recession and overwhelming amount of people in debt, creditors are more than willing to negotiate your debt balance. There are also other debt relief options. Check out the following link to speak with a debt relief counselor for a free consultation.

An Army Wife | Motherhood Unadorned

GUEST POST By: Denise Reed, Mom of 2 & Army Wife

My husband is in the Army Reserves, a term many people do not understand. Being in the Reserves means your full time job is not the Army. A person in the reserves has a regular job but then goes on ?drill? one weekend a month, and two weeks of the year for training. What I have found however, since being with Chris (we married in 1999) is that the one weekend a month and two weeks out of the year is a joke. He spends way more time doing Army stuff, especially since Sept 11.

Since Sept 11 Chris has been on Active Duty 3 times. So in 10 years, Chris has spent 3 entire years on Active Duty. Away from his family, friends, his life and his civilian job. The effects are many. The time away affects marriage, relationships with children, relationships with friends and career.

Before I go any further I want to state up front that I am sharing MY own experience as an ?Army Wife.? All spouses of military members have different experiences. All marriages are different so the ability to handle the separation depends on the relationship of the two people. Please do not take my thoughts as a blanket definition of being an Army Wife.

I believe that everything happens for a reason. Each time Chris has been deployed our life has been affected in many different ways and we always seem to come out better in the long run. Chris loves the Army. He loves the USA. He is proud to serve his country and feels like he is at his best when he is serving. I believe the Army has shaped who he is as a person, and I therefore appreciate the Army for making my husband a man of honor.

I like being a supportive wife. Sometimes its harder to be supportive than others. I often wonder what is harder ? being the one who has to go away and be put in harms way, or being the one left behind trying to hold our life together and being strong in front of the kids.

Two of Chris? deployments were not in combat zones. I will be honest, there is resentment on my part. Chris is off at Oktoberfest in Germany and I am left at home to make sure the kids are taken care of, the bills are paid, the house isn?t falling down, and unable to leave or go do anything unless I find someone to care for the kids. When I am sick or the kids are sick, it is difficult to not have a partner there.

Then I flip back to feeling as though I?d much rather be here and have the kids with me than to travel the world and not be able to hug the kids every day.

After 12 years of marriage, 3 deployments, and 2 kids we are coming to an end of our Army Reserve career. As much as it is Chris who has the rank and goes away, I feel like being an Army Reservist is a whole family commitment. Chris could not maintain life without me hanging back (both personally and professionally), staying committed to him, and managing the family.

So in less than 2 years, he will hang up his boots and we will finally get 4 weekends a month to have family time, to keep up with projects, manage sports, and basically everything. Up to now it has always seemed like there is never enough time to get things done. Is there ever really time to get it all done?

We were lucky enough that by the time Sept 11 occured, Chris was a Captain and on his way to Major. He was a high enough rank that he could actually control some of the things that happened while he was on active duty. When he was in Iraq he was able to call me every single day. I was fortunate to talk to him daily and know that he was alive. Some are not as lucky and do not get to contact their family as often. I know if he could not have called, my anxiety would have been MUCH worse.

I look at the paper every day and I see the names of the soldiers who have died, most of them young, enlisted kids. They are someone?s son or daughter, but also a husband, wife, mother or father. And I know some that have died are survived by grandparents and great grandparents. Our society today doesn?t always ?get it? that we are a nation at war. People of honor and integrity are freely giving their time and for some, their lives to protect us. And in many cases these young people are not getting the support they deserve.

No matter what my challenges have been, I think its important for everyone to understand that there are a lot of soldiers who return home and have a very hard time acclimating back into real life. Many are becoming suicidal and have PTSD. They don?t always feel comfortable enough to get help. Some die because they didn?t have the ?strength? to ask for help.

Many service men and women see asking for help or going to a counselor as a sign of weakness, or even something that will hurt their career because they must report to the military that they go to counseling. For a time, that was absolutely true and in some people?s mind, it still is. However, I believe the Military as a whole is recognizing the high numbers of suicides and are trying to not only support but also promote seeking help when needed.

I work in the social service field so I know enough to have helped Chris upon his return home. We went through a period of him jumping out of bed and running into walls at any bump in the night. I was able to recognize what was happening and talk him down and remind him he was safe at home. His stopped in less than 6 months. Those who do not have spouses with social service knowledge may not know what to do or may not understand. That is why it is so important as a spouse to recognize the need and encourage getting help if needed.

I have learned many things being an Army wife.

I have learned that I am much stronger than I ever thought. Each time he goes away I get stronger.

I have learned that I am happier when he is home and life is certainly less stressful.

I have learned to appreciate simply being able to go to a movie with the whole family OR being able to go to a Rated R movie with a good friends while Chris takes care of the kids.

I have learned that it is OK for me to go away and leave him with the kids for a weekend, but I really wouldn?t want to go away for too much longer without seeing my kids.

I have learned that my house, specifically the kitchen island, is a lot cleaner when he is gone. But I would much rather live with a cluttered kitchen island than have him go away for another year!

Local Chevys franchisee files for bankruptcy | Hot finance topics

Written on July 28, 2011

The franchise owner of local Chevys Fresh Mex restaurants has filed for bankruptcy and plans to shutter a store at the St. Louis Mills mall in Hazelwood.

The closure of the Hazelwood Chevys, which is expected to occur in the next few days, follows T&J Restaurants? closure of the Chevys in Columbia, Mo., earlier this week.

T&J Restaurants, which owns seven local restaurants and is based in O?Fallon, Ill., filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the Southern District of Illinois on July 21.

In its bankruptcy filing, T&J lists $7.7 million in liabilities and $2.8 million in assets.

T&J?s workforce of 450 will drop to between 350 and 375 because of the closure of the two Chevys locations.

The remaining six restaurants will remain open while the company seeks to renegotiate some of its leases, said T&J?s managing member John Whicker, who lives in St. Charles. ?It will be business as usual,? he said.

Robert Eggmann, T&J?s attorney, said high rents at three of the Chevys restaurant properties

Prostate cancer report discord | Men Health Wizard

A National Health Committee?s report suggesting men should be
encouraged to seek up-to-date information from their general
practitioners about prostate cancer screening and treatment
has been praised as well as criticised.

The report on the inquiry into early detection and treatment
of the disease released yesterday does not recommend a
national screening programme at this stage.

Prostate Cancer Foundation chief executive Keith Beck said
the report was a ?vital first step in a critical aspect of
men?s health?.

The foundation expected general practitioners to take a lead
from the report and encourage their male patients to have
regular tests for prostate cancer when they reached their
40s.

Doctors would also counsel men about the benefits and
limitations of such testing.

However, University of Otago epidemiologist Associate Prof
Brian Cox said, after spending 18 months on hearings, the
select committee had not got ?any further? with the
controversial issue ? ?confusion continues to reign?.

?If the medical professionals as a group can?t decide what?s
best, how do they expect men to??

It was an ?interesting precedent? having the National Health
Committee write a guide for the medical practice of public
health, he said.

Health Committee chairman Dr Paul Hutchison said the
committee?s findings would reduce confusion.

There had been much confusion when a 2004 committee had
advised it did not recommend screening men without symptoms
for prostate cancer regardless of age because of the risks
associated with screening using the unreliable
prostate-specific antigen test (PSA), and the effects of
subsequent treatment exceeded any benefits.

Surgeons told the committee they would regularly see men with
advanced prostate cancer who were frustrated and angry they
had had no knowledge of, or choice to seek, a PSA test, he
said.

The committee proposes GPs should be encouraged to provide
men with initial consultations about the advantages and
disadvantages of screening and treatment from the age of 45
during their cardiovascular risk assessment.

Doctors would be encouraged to advise men with a strong
family history of the disease to have their full history
noted then undergo a clinical examination, PSA testing and
rectal examination from the age of 40.

If the committee?s recommendations were approved by the
Government, the ministry would be asked to provide, within a
year, evidence-based, up-to-date and easily understood
information for men about screening and treatment.

Speaking to concern about over-treatment of the disease, Dr
Hutchison said in recent years there had been an increase in
active surveillance where doctors would monitor patients with
low-grade, slow-growing prostate cancer over time using
measures such as ultrasound and PSA testing.

The report also calls for a national quality-improvement
programme for prostate cancer early detection and care.

Finance ? Construction loans and Bad Credit | Financial Crossing

They recently bought a lot to build your dream house and your plans are ready. Now is the time to start, for a construction loan. The bank manager was very cooperative, both completed the necessary documentation to get things rolling. The bank manager said it would take several weeks for them to see the projects and to make their minds if you borrow money for the construction loan.

Build your house is much smarter to buy a houseHome Owners Association that in a, which is already built. The smartest thing to build your home is that you end up settling. You actually get what you want in a home. If you buy a used home, the house has been in this people built their house, which is what they want and need as usual. The positive side is that is new and done for you.

Credit is important when looking for a construction loan to build their dream home. EvilCredit can be a real disaster if the funding be sought. Banks and mortgage companies do not trust me, they like to do their good customers. This can really put a damper on your project. For this reason you probably think you have the right to never be in a position for a construction loan. This is not true. In fact there are banks, provides loans for bad credit in your house specials. The opportunity was a prize for the loan to pay with restrictions, butfunding is possible. I did a search on Google, guess', there are five companies that are willing to finance the new loan home. Your dream could become reality, and not settle for the small apartment. You can build your house for your family instead!

This type of financing can be complicated. They are not as easy as a normal mortgage. There are no controls on the as-builds, which are required by banks or mortgage companies. II remember when we built our first house. It took a month to get approval. Then we began assigning parts of the work. When we arrived at 50%, and would consider it OK to provide additional resources. Then and then 80% to 100%. It depends on the lender. It 'a great feeling to build what you want. Go for it if you feel well.

Consequently, to obtain a construction loan with a bad credit score is possible with the right lender. If the project is completed, will be greatSatisfaction in knowing that what you have achieved you built this house. The funding is a bit 'more complicated and require a mortgage normal regular inspections by the creditor. If you are good to build your house, go for it.

Subsea World News - Canada: Tidal Energy Holds Great Potential

Canada: Tidal Energy Holds Great Potential

Minas Basin Pulp and Power Co. Ltd. (MBPP) is paving the way for coastal communities in Nova Scotia to compete in a growing industry.

In 2008, the provincial government gave MBPP, a Hantsport-based pulp and power production company, the go-ahead to develop North America?s first tidal power observation facility ? a multi-million dollar project that would, eventually, bring tidal energy to Canada.

Three years later, the completed Fundy Tidal Energy Demonstration Facility, which is operated by the Fundy Ocean Research Centre for Energy (FORCE) institute, enables experts to evaluate the performance potential of in-stream, energy-producing turbines in the Minas Passage, while monitoring the impact the energy-extracting technology has on marine environments.

The world-class test facility, located 10 kilometres west of Parrsboro, is expected to be ready to host four tidal turbines, each connected via 64 megawatts of submarine cables, by 2012.

?Harnessing energy

Minas Basin Pulp and Power is partnering with Marine Current Turbines Ltd. of Bristol, England, to design and deploy one of those turbines in the high-energy environment.

?Once the 64 megawatts of cables are installed, the demonstration facility can boast of having the largest tidal infrastructure in the world,? said John Woods, the vice president of energy development at Minas Basin and chairman of FORCE.

?Next summer, with the cable infrastructure and four technologies, really, the world focus will be on the Minas Passage and the Bay of Fundy.?

Based on the average energy consumption in Nova Scotia homes, Woods estimates the tidal turbines will generate enough electricity to support 2,000 houses annually.

Woods says Minas Basin?s strategic location on the coast of the Bay of Fundy gives the business a competitive advantage in the tidal power industry.

?Hantsport is 35 kilometres, sailing distance, from the best tidal site in the world,? he said, during an interview July 20 at the company?s historic headquarters.

??We have a project out there that has a total value of $112 million.?

He said it takes roughly three hours to access the site off the coast of Parrsboro by boat from Hantsport.

This direct accessibility, Woods says, makes it easier to maintain than the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) ? the world?s first and only other test facility for tidal energy convertors, which is nestled amid the Orkney Islands, north of Scotland.

??There?s two in the world ? ours, and theirs,? he said, noting that it often takes maintenance workers two flights and a 45-minute boat ride to reach the centre.

Woods said Minas Basin is pleased to be in a close second in the world race to harness renewable energy from the ocean, at least for now.

??We?d like to be just behind them and let them learn the expensive lessons, and we?ll learn the lesser ones,? he said.

??Nobody can afford to make the same mistake twice, so it is very much an international collaboration on tidal energy.?

?Leading-edge technology

Woods said Minas Basin Pulp and Power and Marine Current Turbines have taken an innovative approach in the engineering stages of the SeaGen turbine?s development that will make Nova Scotia a world leader in the tidal-energy industry when the turbine is deployed in the Minas Passage.

?Our unit is scheduled to go in the sea in 2013. It will have no gravity base. The other three turbines will have a very large, heavy base, which will hold them to the sea floor,? Woods said, adding that MBPP?s model is small enough to be fully submerged at low tide.

?Our approach will be to drill a pin in the (sea) floor and attach our generator to the pin, thereby eliminating hundreds of tons of steel, and? eliminating costs,? he explained.

??It hasn?t been done anywhere else in the world.?

Woods says MBPP is working with their partners to conduct tank tests overseas that will test the integrity of the technologically-advanced turbine they intend to drop in the fast-moving Bay of Fundy waters that have the highest tides in the world.

??We hope to have activity in the Minas Passage next summer, (installing) the pin. The drilling machine will be there.?

He anticipates the turbine will be fastened to the pin in the following spring or summer.

??Unlike the others, ours will float. If you release it from the pin, it will come to the surface much like a balloon would, or a buoy.?

?Job growth ahead

Authorities in Bristol and Hantsport will have the ability to release the turbine from the sea floor through remote-control access at their headquarters when maintenance is required. The work, Woods says, will happen on site or at MBPP?s wharf ? where he hopes to see the turbine built in late 2012.

??We have every intention of building the unit here in Hantsport, on the Minas waterfront or adjacent to it.?

Building the turbine, Woods says, would require hiring more staff to get the job done and would mark a return, of sorts, to the Town of Hantsport?s shipbuilding roots.

?We think that the approach to build it in Hantsport is quite an undertaking. We have a dock that?s 160 metres long; we can use that for construction or we can build it adjacent to the dock and slide it in to the water at high tide,? he said.

??We?re starting to think about how we can create a manufacturing facility on our property or on adjacent properties.?

Scott Travers, the president of Minas Basin Pulp and Power, says MBPP is responsible for about 180 direct employees and roughly 500 to 600 spinoff jobs.

If the tidal project progresses as planned, Travers sees this number growing substantially.

??The energy portion of our portfolio certainly will demand all levels of employment,? he said.

He says the business thrives because it is rich with employees who share a common desire to create change that will have a positive impact on the environment they operate within.

??That?s what really drives us, motivates us and, at the end of the day, that?s what keeps us going,? Travers said.

In the 1990s, Minas Basin Pulp and Power, a business founded in 1927 by the entrepreneurial efforts of Roy Jodrey, started using recycled cardboard, rather than trees, for production at the paper mill.

??This operation has allowed the government to ban corrugated waste to the landfills and, in so doing, we?re improving our environmental footprint here in Nova Scotia,? Travers said.

??The waste that was normally going to landfills is being redirected to this mill. We?re one of the biggest recyclers in Eastern Canada.?

Travers says the ?huge? tidal energy project is one of many examples of the innovation that keeps MBPP alive and well.

??Not all of our eggs are in one basket.?

?A wake-up call

Woods says Minas Basin?s advances in the tidal-energy industry could potentially benefit any seaside community in Nova Scotia ? especially if the company proves turbines can be built outside of Halifax.

??The Fundy region has got to figure this thing out and create the industry,? Woods said.

??If we can do it in Hantsport, why can?t we do it in other coastal communities??

He says coastal communities in Nova Scotia can each play a vital role in growing the tidal-power industry.

??This is staring us in the face,? Woods said.

??There are just untold opportunities here, and wherever there is an ocean.?

Economic jitters threaten holiday chip cheer (Reuters)

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) ? Makers of chips for TVs, game consoles and other consumer electronics aren't expecting much for Christmas, but insatiable demand for high-end gadgets like Apple's iPad will likely deliver some cheer.

Texas Instruments, Intel and Qualcomm are normally busy this time of year churning out microchips for consumer electronics -- typically the hottest tickets during the annual holiday season from November to December.

But persistently high U.S. unemployment and the risk of further economic slowdown, along with the danger of a European financial crisis, have soured many manufacturers' moods, according to a growing chorus of chip executives.

Even blockbuster expectations for smartphones have cooled slightly.

"Wherever we look right now there's macroeconomic uncertainty," ARM Holdings Chief Executive Warren East told analysts on a conference call on Tuesday. "There is uncertainty about consumer expenditure."

Cambridge, England-based ARM, whose chip technology is widely used in smartphones and tablets, warned that an uptick in chip manufacturing typically seen ahead of Christmas might be smaller than normal this year.

"Consumer spending is cautious," said Longbow Research analyst JoAnne Feeney. "(Product manufacturers) are in a wait-and-see holding pattern. They want to see whether demand materializes before they build more televisions, set-top boxes and cameras."

Last week, Intel cut its outlook for 2011 PC shipments and said growth would come from China and other emerging markets instead of the United States or Europe.

3M Co said on Tuesday its display and graphics segment fell in the June quarter, reflecting less demand for LCD TVs and a tighter consumer electronics market.

Because many of its products are low-cost, quickly used and sold all over the world, 3M is a barometer of global industrial health.

Texas Instruments said on Monday computing and consumer electronics customers concerned about the economy were ordering fewer chips than usual for this time of year. It said store shelves could fill up later than usual this holiday shopping season.

As well as tough economic times, ripples from Japan's earthquake in March are still affecting the industry.

Electronics manufacturers that deliberately ordered extra components following the disaster are now less worried about shortages and are beginning to work through their inventories, leading to fewer new orders, said CLSA analyst Srini Pajjuri.

Consumer appetite for Apple's smartphones is as strong as ever, but growth at competitors like Nokia, Research in Motion and LG Electronics has faltered.

And a slew of tablets meant to compete with the iPad have failed to take off, adding to inventories of chips that had been manufactured in anticipation of higher sales but have gone unused.

"Demand for smartphones and tablets is OK, but it's not as good as people were thinking," said MKM Partners analyst Daniel Berenbaum. "Plus smartphones and feature phones have a big headwind in Europe, which is a very important market."

Smartphone shipments this year will grow about 38 percent, according to market research firm IHS iSuppli. Analysts earlier this year had forecast expansion of around 50 percent.

Shares of Broadcom, which makes Bluetooth and other wireless chips and counts Apple as a key customer, soared 9 percent after the Irvine, California company gave a rosier-than-expected quarterly outlook.

Some investors expect larger wireless chipmaker Qualcomm to supply key chips for Apple's next iPhone and to continue to increase its content in Apple's devices.

Qualcomm last week raised its guidance for the current quarter, although Chief Financial Officer William Keitel warned that economic uncertainty was making customers "extra judicious".

Chipmakers that do their own manufacturing, instead of contracting it out, and that have inventories on hand, may be able to respond in time to any last-minute holiday orders should the outlook for consumer demand improve.

Texas Instruments has said there is still time to ramp up ahead of the year-end shopping season and that its factories will be ready if demand improves.

"Christmas could still come if consumers indicate they're going to spend, Longbow's Feeney said.

Listened Audio: In Ear Monitors

In ear monitors by Listened Audio is really a type of monitoring system that pro DJ?s and musicians use to form their performance, while omitting the general issues that are usually associated with conventional monitoring techniques. However, what?s the difference between traditional monitors and the in-ear monitors?

Historically, the earlier monitors were basically speakers that were aimed directly at the performer and these speakers would give the performer a live feed sound stream based on what they were doing. This was done so the singer was able to hear what he was doing and also be able to adjust the way these people were performing on the fly. However, when the duo Chrys Lindop and Martin Noar, the English engineer came together, they created the first in ear monitor that?s now becoming used increasingly more by professionals all over the entire world.

How does the in-ear monitor works?
The in-ear monitor simply replaces the speakers of the traditional monitors with in-ear headphones which has been designed to keep out all external noises, while simultaneously delivering the appropriate sounds towards the entertainer that?ll assist to mold their music and these in-ear monitors act like but are better than those that come with the current MP3 players.

What kinds of in-ear monitor are available on the marketplace?
In-ear monitors could oftentimes be created to use a RF wireless or they can be constructed to be hardwired and they?re created, either way for them to have the ability to receive the necessary data. However, the hardwired versions are preferred by DJ?s and musicians simply because they come less costly and because DJ?s hardly move about but in contrast live entertainers will go with the RF wireless types because they?re permitted to move as freely as they desire with these models.

You could also get your in-ear monitors in either fashioned models or standard. The fashioned in-ear monitors are fashioned like medical hearing aids and are produced to fit into your auditory meatus perfectly; nonetheless, the traditional models are made with sound dampening foam.

In-ear monitors have many of the benefits and the major one is that it gives the singer the freedom to move, while at the same time providing sound alienation. Having said that, if you?re hunting to obtain a wireless in-ear monitor, you could look to invest quite a bit of money on these devices and there are numerous parts that come with this mechanism and they all carry a different figure and when you add this up, it can come up to a lot.

Regardless the costs, the in ear monitor by Listened Audio is the best engineering for DJ?s and musicians.

NKorean official to go to US for nuclear talks (AP)

HONG KONG ? A senior North Korean official will visit the United States this week to discuss the possible resumption of long-stalled international negotiations on ending Pyongyang's nuclear programs, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said Sunday.

The news that diplomats could be close to reviving six-nation disarmament talks that broke off in 2008 comes after more than a year of animosity and high tension between the rival Koreas and raises hopes in a region on edge. Two attacks Seoul blames on Pyongyang last year killed 50 South Koreans and led to threats of war.

Clinton's invitation for North Korean Vice Foreign Minister Kim Kye Gwan to visit New York follows a crucial meeting Friday between nuclear negotiators from North and South Korea on the sidelines of a regional forum of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, in Bali. It was the first such meeting since disarmament talks collapsed in 2008, and the envoys agreed to work toward the resumption of six-nation negotiations.

The recent diplomacy comes after more than a year of hardline unity by Washington and Seoul since international investigators said a North Korean torpedo sank a South Korean warship in March of last year, killing 46 sailors. The South demanded the North show regret for the warship sinking and an artillery attack on a front-line South Korean island that killed four in November.

North Korea denies a role in the sinking and says South Korea provoked the island shelling. While refusing to apologize, however, Pyongyang has repeatedly shown a willingness to return to the disarmament talks. The North is seen as needing a diplomatic breakthrough and outside food aid ahead of the 2012 centennial of the birth of the country's founder, Kim Il Sung.

"We are open to talks with North Korea, but we do not intend to reward the North just for returning to the table," Clinton said in a statement announcing Kim Kye Gwan's trip to the U.S. "We will not give them anything new for actions they have already agreed to take. And we have no appetite for pursuing protracted negotiations that will only lead us right back to where we have already been."

The wariness is in line with past U.S. statements that ally Seoul must be satisfied with the North's sincerity before Washington will act.

In another sign of easing tensions, South Korea said Monday that it has approved flour aid to North Korea for the first time since last year's artillery attack. Seoul has provided basic, small-scale humanitarian aid in recent months, but flour had been excluded because of worries about it being used to feed the military.

Traveling with Clinton in Hong Kong, the top U.S. diplomat for Asia, Kurt Campbell, insisted that the talks were preliminary and aimed at laying out steps the United States must see before resuming the nuclear negotiations or having a "more fulsome interaction" with North Korea.

Campbell stressed that the United States would need to see much more from North Korea on improving ties with the South and rejected suggestions that U.S. is now on a "fast track" to returning to the talks. "We need to see many more indications from the North Koreans before we approach that point," he told reporters.

During Kim's trip, he will meet with a team of U.S. officials to explore his country's commitment to returning to the international talks and taking concrete steps toward disarmament, Clinton said in the statement.

It was unclear what days Kim, the North's former chief nuclear envoy, will visit New York. The announcement follows an earlier meeting between Clinton and the foreign ministers of South Korea and Japan in Bali.

The nuclear negotiations involve the two Koreas, the U.S., China, Japan and Russia.

North Korean Foreign Minister Pak Ui Chun said in comments released Sunday by the country's state media that the Korean peninsula now stands "on the crossroads of detente and the vicious cycle of escalating tension."

The countries involved, Pak said, must "make the best use of (the) opportunity of dialogue and make a bold decision to settle the fundamental issue."

Diplomats have been eager for the two rivals to ease tensions.

Since the last round of talks, North Korea has conducted a second nuclear test and revealed a uranium enrichment facility that could give it another way to make atomic bombs.

Recent North Korean threats against Seoul's conservative government include a pledge to retaliate over South Korean soldiers' use of pictures of the ruling North Korean family for target practice.

The two Koreas remain in a technical state of war because their three-year conflict ended in a truce, not a peace treaty, in 1953. The United States has 28,500 troops in the South. That presence is cited by the North as a main factor behind its need to build a nuclear program.

Where did life exist on Mars? NASA chooses landing site for Curiosity rover

Curiosity rover, formally known as the Mars Science Laboratory, will land at the foot of an 18,000-foot mountain in Gale crater, NASA announced Friday. The mount is expected to yield unparalleled information on where and when life might have existed on Mars.

NASA scientists announced Friday that the next Mars rover will land at the foot of a towering mountain ? higher than any in the continental United States ? and so dramatically layered that scientists hope to read it like a novel of Martian history, discovering where and when life might have existed on the Red Planet.

The August 2012 arrival of the roving Mars Science Laboratory, nicknamed Curiosity, represents an important moment in the history of Mars science, team members suggested.

Curiosity will land on the floor of Gale crater, a tiny landing target that would have been off-limits to previous rovers. Moreover, the rover, which is much bigger and burlier than earlier rovers, is designed easily to cover distances and climb slopes that would have sent shivers down the spine of previous rover-mission managers.

The Curiosity team has even dared to dream that, one day, Curiosity might stand atop the mysterious three-mile-high mountain in the middle of Gale crater, giving its Earthbound operators a spectacular view over the Marian landscape. The crater floor is sloped, so the southern side of the mountain rises some 15,000 feet, while the northern approach ? which Curiosity will likely take ? reaches closer to 18,000 feet.

This mission marks a new and growing confidence among planetary scientists. While the human spaceflight program has an uncertain future, after the ending of the space shuttle program on Thursday with the landing of Atlantis, NASA probes are becoming ever-more adept at exploring previously out-of-reach realms of the solar system, from Pluto to the surface of Saturnian moons to the scorched face of Mercury.

Curiosity, in that way, represents a significant step toward breaking down the technological barriers that have prevented scientists from going where they want in our cosmic neighborhood.

?Geologists like to climb up cliffs, and scientists get to do this for the first time on Mars with this rover,? said Dawn Summer, a geologist at the University of California at Davis, who was a panelist at the announcement Friday. ?There is an incredibly rich suite? of things to investigate, she adds, ?and it is an incredibly beautiful place.?

Curiosity has been billed as NASA?s first astrobiology mission since Viking arrived on Mars in 1976. Its goal is not to find direct evidence of past life ? no fossil-hunting here. Instead, it will look for where and when Mars might once have been habitable ? a step further than the Opportunity and Spirit rovers went in seeking signatures of water in 2004.

The rocket holding Curiosity is set to launch from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida between Nov. 25 and Dec. 18 of this year, and the rover should arrive on Mars in August 2012.

The Gale crater landing site announced Friday was chosen from among 60 original candidate sites, which NASA had whittled down to four finalists by last summer. The clincher? The mountain sitting inside Gale crater is a mystery that may hold the history of water ? and potentially life ? on Mars.

Reynolds American 2Q profit falls on charges (AP)

RICHMOND, Va. ? Cigarette maker Reynolds American Inc. said Friday its second-quarter profit fell almost 11 percent, chiefly on charges related to a legal case.

Excluding those charges, the nation's second-biggest tobacco company said its earnings rose 2 percent as higher prices and smokeless tobacco gains offset cigarette volume declines.

The maker of Camel, Pall Mall and Natural American Spirit brand cigarettes said its net income fell to $304 million, or 52 cents per share, for the period ended June 30, from $341 million, or 58 cents per share, a year ago.

Earnings reflected charges of $139 million, or 15 cents per share, related to a smoking-cessation lawsuit in Louisiana. They were also affected by a $3 million charge related to plant closings. Excluding those items, earnings were 67 cents per share. Analysts polled by FactSet expected higher adjusted earnings of 71 cents per share.

Revenue excluding excise taxes rose less than 1 percent to $2.27 billion from $2.25 billion a year ago, beating analyst estimates of $2.1 billion for the Winston-Salem, N.C., company.

Its shares fell 56 cents, or 1.5 percent, to $37.95 in premarket trading.

The company "delivered solid second-quarter performance given the challenging competitive and economic environment" with gains in its key cigarette and smokeless tobacco brands, CEO Daniel M. Delen said in a news release.

Reynolds American said it sold 4.4 percent fewer cigarettes than last year's quarter. That compares with its estimate of a total industry decline of 1.3 percent, which the company said benefited from a significant increase in wholesale inventory levels.

The company sold 3 percent less of its Camel brand but volumes of Pall Mall grew 15 percent.

Camel's market share remained stable at 7.8 percent of the U.S. market, while Pall Mall's market share grew 1.5 percentage points to 8.5 percent.

The company has promoted Pall Mall as a longer-lasting and more affordable cigarette as smokers weather the weak economy and high unemployment, and has said half the people who try the brand continue using it.

Reynolds American and other tobacco companies are also focusing on cigarette alternatives such as snuff and chewing tobacco for future sales growth as tax hikes, smoking bans, health concerns and social stigma make the cigarette business tougher.

The company sold 3.6 percent more of its smokeless tobacco brands including Grizzly and Kodiak and its U.S. market share of the segment grew 1.5 percentage points to 31.3 percent.

It also narrowed its full-year forecast for earnings between $2.62 and $2.70 per share, excluding costs related to legal cases, plant closings and tax items. Analysts expected earnings of $2.67 per share for the year.

Reynolds American's larger competitor, Altria Group Inc., parent of Marlboro maker Philip Morris USA, said Wednesday that, while cigarette sales fell slightly, it was getting higher prices. Altria's top-selling Marlboro brand lost 0.2 points of market share to end up with 42.6 percent of the U.S. market, but it sold about 1 percent more of the brand.

Wambach lifts US to final in 3-1 win over France (AP)

MOENCHENGLADBACH, Germany ? Abby Wambach sure knows how to deliver.

A goal, a promise and soon, she hopes, a World Cup title.

The U.S. women had fans on edge once again until Wambach broke a tense tie with her header off a corner kick in the 79th minute Wednesday. Alex Morgan scored three minutes later to seal a 3-1 semifinal victory over France, and the Americans let loose with a party that carried all the way across the Atlantic Ocean.

Next up, a trip to the World Cup final Sunday in Frankfurt that will be the first for Americans since 1999, when they last won it all. They'll play Japan, which upset Sweden 3-1 to move one step away from realizing its own dream.

"We've achieved part of our goal. We're in the final," Wambach said. "We want to complete it. We want to be world champs."

So do their fans, new and old.

The Americans captivated the crowd back home with their epic, come-from-behind win over Brazil on Sunday, and a little thing called a workday wasn't going to deter them. Some fans skipped work ? bars opened early for the noon EDT kickoff ? while others sneaked peeks at the game in the office. At the Phoenix airport, dozens of fans crowded around TVs to watch the game.

When the final whistle blew, Hollywood celebrities, pro athletes and ordinary folks who didn't know a free kick from a corner kick just a few days ago flooded Twitter with congratulations. "My heroes. Wambach. Boxx. Rapinoe. Solo. That TEAM! Our team!" actor Tom Hanks tweeted. Super Bowl MVP Aaron Rodgers said, "Awesome job US Women, finish it off Sunday now."

Wambach and company were glad to share the moment.

"These wins, we can't do it alone. We know a whole nation is cheering us on," Wambach said. "We believe in ourselves and we're in the final. I couldn't be happier."

A little relieved, too.

France was the surprise of the tournament, making the semifinals with a creativity and flair that was breathtaking to behold. And for much of the game, the U.S. couldn't contain Les Bleues.

"We didn't play well today," U.S. coach Pia Sundhage said. "However, we find a way to win and that's a credit to the players' hearts. That's what makes it so wonderful to be coach of this team."

With the U.S. struggling to create opportunities in the middle, Sundhage replaced Carli Lloyd with sparkplug Megan Rapinoe early in the second half, moved Lauren Cheney inside and pulled Wambach back to the midfield.

The difference was noticeable immediately. The Americans were able to push forward and began threatening French goalkeeper Berangere Sapowicz.

Finally, in the 79th, the Americans won a corner kick.

"I told (Cheney) at halftime, 'Put the ball to the back post, and we're going to get a goal,'" Wambach said.

Cheney delivered the ball perfectly to the far post and, just as Wambach had predicted, she soared over the scrum and pushed the ball past Sapowicz.

"I knew Abby was going to beat her," Cheney said, referring to the French defender who practically mugged Wambach to try and contain her.

Asked how, Cheney said, "Because she's Abby Wambach."

Wambach let out a scream and did a sliding sprint into the corner, where she was mobbed by her teammates. It was her third goal of the tournament and 12th of her career, tying fellow American Michelle Akers for third on the all-time World Cup scoring list.

Morgan then put the game out of reach, outracing four defenders and then stutter-stepping in front of the goal, throwing Sapowicz off and leaving the American with a wide-open shot.

"The priority is not to accept another goal," France coach Bruno Bini said through a translator. "When that happens, you've had it. We conceded another goal and that was it for us."

Mia Hamm, Brandi Chastain, Julie Foudy and Co. got the rock-star treatment during the '99 World Cup, and every team since then has lived in their shadow. Part of the problem is no team's been able to duplicate that group's success. But nobody's been able to captivate the U.S. public like that golden group, either.

Until now.

"Nothing to take away from them because what they did was special. What they did gave us the opportunities all of us have here," Wambach said. "This generation is cool because we want to make a name for ourselves. We want the next generation to be ours."

Despite the loss, the World Cup was a resounding success for the French. In just their second World Cup appearance, they reached the semifinals and qualified for next summer's London Olympics.

"Do you know any coach who will tell you it's fantastic to lose?" Bini asked. "But we must give credit where credit is due."

The U.S. was staked to an early lead by Cheney's goal in the ninth minute. But with the silky smooth Louisa Necib calling the shots, France dominated for most of the game, finishing with a whopping 25-11 advantage in shots. The French missed two great chances in the first half, with goalkeeper Hope Solo having to tip a Gaetane Thiney shot away in the 30th and Sonia Bompastor rattling the crossbar two minutes later.

Finally, in the 55th, France got its equalizer. Bompastor floated in a cross from about 30 yards and, with the dangerous Gaetane Thiney right in front of her, Solo had little opportunity to move. The ball flew right past her.

But part of the blame goes to Becky Sauerbrunn, who was starting in place of the suspended Rachel Buehler and fell behind Thiney.

"I think (Thiney) got a step ahead of her," Solo said. "But I definitely expect our defenders, when the ball goes in the box, to get it out of there."

But just as they did Sunday against Brazil, the Americans got stronger and stronger as the game went on before Wambach ? who scored a critical goal in the waning moments against the Brazilians ? came through.

"In the end, we're in the finals," Wambach said, "and that's all that matters."
