TrustGo Antivirus and Mobile Security 1.3.3 (for Android)

As a totally free security suite, TrustGo is something of a rarity in Google Play where freemium and subscription models predominate among security apps. Better still, TrustGo provides the usual slate of anti-theft tools along with top-tier malware protection and an interesting app certification system, giving you information about apps before you download them. However, my enthusiasm for TrustGo is tempered by issues I have with how it remotely locks the device, which I believe leaves the device vulnerable.

Focused on Apps
What separates TrustGo from products like Kaspersky Mobile Security is that it focuses on apps. In the App Manager tab, you'll be presented with a list of popular apps that TrustGo has scanned and certified as safe to use. According to TrustGo, the company scans 400 app marketplaces around the world, and gathers information from users to stay abreast of new Android apps. For users this is a first line of defense against malicious applications.

The My Apps sub tab will give you information on what's installed on your device, but is irritatingly not open by default.

From here, you can uninstall an app in seconds, or report it to TrustGo for unusual behavior. The reporting feature is a bit odd since it requires users to do a bit of investigation on their own, but is certainly useful for TrustGo to keep informed about the app ecosystem.

From the Security screen, you can access Privacy Guard. This breaks down the permissions requested by apps into broad categories, giving you a bird's eye view of what kind of information your apps can access. If TrustGo has flagged an app as insecure or unsafe it will provide more information on the risks presented by the app. Unfortunately, Android does not provide granular permissions control, requiring users to either take the risk or uninstall the app. Tapping on an app in Privacy Guard list allows you to uninstall it, and also indicates whether the app has been certified by TrustGo.

Note that not all suspicious apps will be flagged in Privacy Guard, only apps which TrustGo believes could expose your personal information.

Scanning and Impact on the User
Even the scans carried out by TrustGo's Security Scanner are focused on apps, though it will run through every available file on your phone as soon as you tap the scan option from the homescreen. Kaspersky Mobile Security, on the other hand, gives you the option of a targeted folder, app-only, or full system scan as well as other options.

Like other security apps, TrustGo scans new apps as their installed for potential threats. According the app's developers, the app can identify potential threats even in apps the company has never seen before thanks to heuristic scans performed on the device.

It took TrustGo an average of 62.4 seconds to scan 238 apps and other assorted files while a dozen other apps were running. This was well behind the much faster Bitdefender, but still fast enough to where it wouldn't impact the user.

Version 1.3.2 of TrustGo introduced significant changes to the anti-malware engine, which caused the app to jump to the top of AV-Test's January 2013 results with a perfect score. This independent testing lab also praised the additional features of the app, giving it a perfect usability score. PC Mag currently does not perform mobile malware detection evaluations in-house.

With TrustGo installed, there's minimal impact on the user. The phone is still fast and responsive, even with a scan running. I didn't notice any stuttering or lag playing Minecraft on my Samsung Galaxy Note II while TrustGo was scanning (even with 11 other apps running). With the TrustGo installed, it takes an average of 25.3 seconds to boot up the phone, and only another five seconds after that before the TrustGo logo appears on the top bar.

TrustGo can do SD card scanning and schedules weekly scans by default. I'd like to see scheduled scans made optional by default, however, since performance is critical with mobile devices.

Identifying and Removing Suspicious Apps
To see how TrustGo handled potentially malicious apps, I installed a penetration testing app that is frequently flagged as malware. After I installed the test app, TrustGo popped up a warning which I was pleased to note categorized it as a low threat, and also included information about the app. Most security apps do not provide information about why they flag the apps that they do. However, enough time had elapsed that I could have easily opened the suspicious app before TrustGo's warning appeared.

From this warning I could uninstall the app or add it to my list of ignored apps. Once ignored, TrustGo will not include the app in its list of possible threats during a system scan. Tapping delete here, or in the scan results, opens the Android uninstaller and removes the app.

During my testing on the Samsung Galaxy Note II, I had a few instances where the Android uninstaller failed to launch after I tapped delete. I was not able to replicate this issue, but for any security app you should check to make sure the uninstall was successful if you don't see a confirmation screen.

System Management
Similar to the Privacy Guard information, TrustGo pulls some of Android's security-related settings and puts them in one easily accessible spot. From the System Management button, you can set limits on your mobile data, see your overall data consumption, and see how much data has been used by individual apps.

For those concerned about battery life, TrustGo also provides estimated durations for various activities. Tapping the lightning bolt button takes you to one of TrustGo's more unusual sections, where it appears to be breaking down what percentage of your battery time each app is consuming. Presumably this battery information is an amalgamation of how much RAM and CPU time each app is consuming, however it's poorly explained and one of the few times where TrustGo does a worse job than Android's default system options. This could be a powerful (pun intended) feature with just a little more explanation.

Lastly, the Free Memory section shows a graph of how much RAM your device has available. Tapping the X to the right will shut down many of the apps, potentially freeing up more space for better performance. This shortcuts entering the Android settings menu and shutting down apps one at a time to free up memory. However, some critical processes will be automatically restarted. When I tapped the X it said 36 apps had been shut down but that might be a bit confusing because when I tapped it again it reported the same thing.

These are all features available from the Android settings menu and TrustGo should be commended on making them easy to find and improving usability. I think that by gathering these settings together and associating the, with the idea of security can help make users?particularly new users?more security conscious.

PST: MLS to announce plans for 20th team in NYC

Major League Soccer has announced that in four to six weeks it will unveil plans for a new stadium in New York City to house the league?s 20th team.

Commissioner Don Garber discussed the plans while talking with reporters at halftime of Wednesday night?s contest between Toronto and Montreal?at BMO Field. In the conversation?Garber informed the public: ?We?are deeply engaged with potential ownership groups and we?re hopeful to be able to announce a 20th team within the next [four to six weeks].? The winning ownership group is expected to pay an expansion fee of?$100 million.

Garber had previously indicated that the league hoped?for something definitive on an expansion franchise in Queens by the end of 2013. He reiterated that desire on Wednesday, noting MLS? progress in getting a deal done.??We?re making progress,? Garber said of talks with New York City. ?We continue ? you?ve heard this for the last year ? but we continue to negotiate with the City of New York and meet with local political folks and community leaders to get support for the stadium we hope to build in Flushing Meadow Park.?

MORE: MLS expansion updates from Commissioner Garber

When asked if the New York Cosmos were going to be the 20th team, Garber refused to answer instead?saying that he and MLS support what the NASL is doing.?Garber did claim, however, that he believes MLS will continue its expansion beyond 20 teams by the end of 2020. But 30 teams? That would be too much of a leap.??It?s hard to imagine we?d have 30 teams,? Garber said. ?The other major leagues are around that size, they?ve been around 100 years.?

The league and the City have previously?been engaged in negotiations to build a stadium on a ten acre site in the Queens-based park with the goal of having a team begin playing there by 2016. On Thursday, Garber spoke again on the issue with the Associated Press, informing reporters that there are no other possible sites for a new stadium. ?If we get this done, it will be in Flushing Meadow Park. There is no Plan B.?

While New York is the league?s preferred choice for expansion, Orlando, Miami and Atlanta have all been linked as possible MLS expansions while USL Pro side Orlando City recently secured a $8.2m downtown parcel of land where they plan to build a new soccer-specific stadium.

Martha Stewart's Online Dating Profile - YourTango

Martha Stewart's online dating profile
Hobbies include wielding blow torches (to whip up creme brulee, of course).

What do you give the diva who has everything? Tips for her online dating profile, of course.

?In the words of America's domestic goddess, Martha Stewart: "I'd like to go to bed with somebody. Sleep with somebody."

Hang on a sec; it's not exactly what you think. On Friday, the 71-year-old grandmother told Matt Lauer on NBC's TODAY that she's been eager to get back in the dating scene again and even started to create an online dating profile using her real name, but never officially signed up. "Well, I had a long-time boyfriend," she said. "That ended a couple years ago. And I haven't found the next Mr. Right."

More from YourTango: How to Find a Date on St. Patrick's Day Online and Offline

Well, it seems that she's had a change of heart. In a second appearance on TODAY, she agreed to give her search for a mate on Match.com another try and her online dating profile is ready to go. "What we know we can get you is some great first dates," Match.com's CEO Sam Yagan told Stewart. "I think finding a soul mate for you might be a little bit difficult, but I think first dates are easily doable."

So what will Martha Stewart's online profile look like? She's about to become one of the millions of singles looking for love online on Match and I have a few tips for her.

Although Stewart told the TODAY that she was intending to use her real name, I disagree. Just like all of the other millions of daters, she should have a catchy screen name to find her dream guy. It would be way less intimidating; not to mention, it would ward of the paparazzi. Why not try something like "LovestoCook", "DomesticGoddess", "CookingAuthor" or (one that she's bound to love) "Domestic Diva"? Keep reading ...

Fire breaks out in Bangladesh building where 377 die

By Ruma Paul and Serajul Quadir

DHAKA (Reuters) - Fire broke out on Sunday in a garment factory that collapsed in the Bangladeshi capital, complicating attempts to find any survivors of a disaster that has killed 377 people.

Fire service officials said the blaze had been started by sparks from cutting equipment used by rescuers.

Police said the owner of the factory, Mohammed Sohel Rana,

was arrested on Sunday trying to flee to India, as hopes of finding more survivors from the country's worst industrial accident began to fade.

Rana was arrested by the elite Rapid Action Battalion in the border town of Benapole, Dhaka District Police Chief Habibur Rahman told Reuters, ending a four-day manhunt that began after Rana Plaza, which housed factories making low-cost garments for Western retailers, caved in on Wednesday.

Bangladesh television showed Rana, a local leader of the ruling Awami League's youth front, being flown by helicopter to the capital Dhaka, where he will face charges of faulty construction and causing unlawful death.

Authorities put the latest death toll at 377 and expect it to climb higher with hundreds more still unaccounted for.

Four people were pulled out alive on Sunday after almost 100 hours beneath the mound of broken concrete and metal, and rescuers were working frantically to try to save several others still trapped, fire services deputy director Mizanur Rahman said. One woman was pulled out of debris by rescuers but died, fire service officials said.

"The chances of finding people alive are dimming, so we have to step up our rescue operation to save any valuable life we can," said Major General Chowdhury Hassan Sohrawardi, coordinator of the operation at the site.

About 2,500 people have been rescued from the wrecked building in the commercial suburb of Savar, about 30 km (20 miles) from the capital, Dhaka.

Officials said the eight-storey complex had been built on spongy ground without the correct permits, and more than 3,000 workers - mainly young women - entered the building on Wednesday morning despite warnings that it was structurally unsafe.

A bank and shops in the same building closed after a jolt was felt and cracks were noticed on some pillars on Tuesday.

Police said one factory owner gave himself up on Sunday following the detention of two plant bosses and two engineers the day before.

Anger over the disaster has sparked days of protests and clashes, with police using tear gas, water cannon and rubber bullets to quell demonstrators who set cars ablaze.

Garment workers blockaded a highway in a nearby industrial zone of Gazipur on Sunday demanding capital punishment for the owners.

The main opposition, joining forces with an alliance of leftist parties which is part of the ruling coalition, called for a national strike on May 2 in protest over the incident.

BUILT ON A FILLED-IN POND

Wednesday's collapse was the third major industrial incident in five months in Bangladesh, the second-largest exporter of garments in the world behind China. In November, a fire at the Tazreen Fashion factory in a suburb of Dhaka killed 112 people.

Such incidents have raised serious questions about worker safety and low wages, and could taint the reputation of the poor South Asian country, which relies on garments for 80 percent of its exports. The industry employs about 3.6 million people, most of them women, some of whom earn as little as $38 a month.

Emdadul Islam, chief engineer of the state-run Capital Development Authority (CDA), said on Friday that the owner of the building had not received the proper construction consent, obtaining a permit for a five-storey building from the local municipality, which did not have the authority to grant it.

Furthermore, three other storeys had been added illegally, he said. "Savar is not an industrial zone, and for that reason no factory can be housed in Rana Plaza," Islam told Reuters.

Islam said the building had been erected on the site of a pond filled in with sand and earth, weakening the foundations.

North American and European chains, including British retailer Primark and Canada's Loblaw, a unit of George Weston Ltd, said they were supplied by factories in the Rana Plaza building.

Since the disaster, the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has asked factory owners to produce building designs by July in a bid to improve safety. (Writing by John Chalmers and Alex Richardson; Editing by Jeremy Laurence and Stephen Powell)

Four civilians, three NATO soldiers killed in Afghanistan

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (Reuters) - Six foreigners and an Afghan were killed in two separate attacks in Afghanistan on Saturday, local and international officials said.

Six people, including three NATO soldiers, died in a car bomb attack on a convoy of vehicles in Zabul province's capital, Qalat. Provincial governor Mohammad Ashraf Nasery, travelling in the convoy, was unharmed but a local doctor was killed, as were three American soldiers and two foreign civilians, according to local and NATO officials.

The cars were en route to a school and were near to a hospital and a NATO base when the car bomb exploded.

Five Afghans, including a student and two reporters, were also wounded, a local official said.

In a separate attack in Afghanistan's east, a U.S. civilian working with the American government was killed during an insurgent attack, the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said in a statement.

Zabul shares borders with Pakistan to the southeast and the birthplace of the Taliban, Kandahar province, to the south.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the Zabul attack via a text message from spokesman Qari Yousuf Ahmadi. He said a car bomb killed seven foreigners and wounded five others, though he later revised the toll to 13 foreigners killed and nine wounded.

The Taliban routinely exaggerate casualty figures.

The killings come in the wake of a bloody Taliban assault in the country's west several days ago that killed 44 people. The United Nations says civilians are being increasingly targeted in 2013.

Unclear if new nuclear talks before Iran vote: U.S. official

MANCHESTER, England, April 5 (Reuters) - Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini believes a lack of goals and maverick striker Mario Balotelli's departure to AC Milan in January has harmed the defence of their Premier League crown. Second-placed City are 15 points behind rivals Manchester United, whom they face at Old Trafford on Monday, and Mancini said last week the title race was over. "Mario scored 15 goals last season. This is the difference, the goals we did not score," Mancini told a news conference on Friday. ...

Ohio judge sentences convicted "Craigslist" killer to death

By Kim Palmer

AKRON, Ohio (Reuters) - An Ohio judge sentenced Richard Beasley to death on Thursday for the murder of three down-on-their-luck men who responded to an ad he placed on the Craigslist website for a nonexistent job.

Prosecutors had called Beasley a "false prophet," and a con man who manipulated his victims to keep himself out of prison, acting as the mastermind and triggerman in the killings he was convicted of committing along with a teenage accomplice.

"Beasley is a master manipulator even up to today, constantly trying to manipulate and lie," Summit County Prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh told reporters afterward, calling it a well-deserved sentence.

After Summit County Common Pleas Judge Lynne Callahan imposed the sentence, Beasley, 53, told her he believed his convictions would be reversed and he would be found innocent.

"I want to make sure you understand: I have killed nobody," said Beasley, who was wearing prison red and white stripes and sitting in a wheelchair.

Beasley has complained of constant neck and back pain from an auto accident and has asked for special mattresses and shoe inserts while in prison.

Beasley was convicted in March of kidnapping and killing David Pauley, 51, of Norfolk, Virginia; Ralph Geiger, 56, of Akron, and Timothy Kern, 47, of Massillon, Ohio.

He was also convicted of the attempted murder of Scott Davis, 49, a South Carolina man who answered the Craigslist ad and was shot in the arm while escaping after meeting Beasley and the teen accomplice, Brogan Rafferty.

The ad had promised a $300-a-week job as a ranch hand in rural Ohio, but the job did not exist.

Beasley and Rafferty were convicted in separate trials. Rafferty was 16 at the time of the crimes and therefore not eligible for the death penalty. He was sentenced to life in prison without parole and plans to appeal his conviction.

Jurors had unanimously recommended that Beasley be sentenced to death. Under Ohio law, the judge had the option of imposing the death penalty or sentencing him to life in prison.

Davis as well as friends and family of the men killed were allowed to speak after the death sentence was imposed.

Davis said he had felt God's presence come over him after he was shot and later when he was walking through the woods looking for help, recalling his painful recovery from the wound. He also told Beasley he planned to attend his execution.

"I will be there as you go, smiling," Davis said.

Afterward, Davis told reporters that Beasley was simply "a liar" when asked about his claim of innocence.

"When he was shooting at me I saw nothing in his eyes," he said.

Debra Bruce, Pauley's twin sister, said her brother had thought the job would provide a fresh start, calling Beasley "an evil and vile person."

Beasley's mother, Carol Beasley, told jurors during the sentencing phase in March to spare her son, who she said was abused physically and sexually as a child - including by a stepfather, who beat him with an extension cord.

The attacks were among a series of incidents in which people advertising goods for sale or responding to ads on Craigslist and other social media have been attacked and killed.

In 2009, a former medical student was accused of killing a masseuse he met through Craigslist. Last year, two men in Tennessee were accused of killing a man and a woman for "unfriending" the daughter of one of the suspects on Facebook.

Justin Bieber given month to collect pet monkey

BERLIN (Reuters) - Teenage pop sensation Justin Bieber has been given a month to provide German authorities with the papers they need to release his pet monkey "Mally".

Customs officials seized Bieber's capuchin monkey at Munich Airport last week when the 19-year-old failed to present the health and species protection certificates required to bring the pet into the country.

Bieber was visiting Munich to give a concert and has since continued on his tour.

"If he doesn't (present the papers), Mally will be taken to a good animal shelter that has experience rearing groups of young capuchin monkeys and can ensure disoriented Mally becomes a healthy little capuchin," the shelter currently caring for the monkey said.

The shelter said Mally, who is around 14 weeks old, had been taken away from its mother too early and was receiving veterinary care.

A spokesman for Munich's customs office said it would decide whether to keep the animal at the current shelter or move it elsewhere at the end of the four-week deadline.

He added that Bieber would likely have to pay a fine, but declined to give details of the amount.

Hyundai, Kia recalling 1.9 million vehicles

Korean automakers Hyundai and Kia are initiating one of their largest recalls ever ? or more precisely, three separate service actions announced today that involve 1.9 million vehicles sold in the U.S. market since late 2006.

The majority of the vehicles involved were subject to earlier recalls designed to address the same issue ? electronic gremlins that could impact a wide variety of systems, from stop lamps to stability control, and even prevent the use of the push-button stop feature.

Meanwhile, the small Japanese automaker Subaru is recalling 200,000 vehicles of its own due to brake line corrosion issues.

The Detroit Bureau: Lawsuit Claims Design Defect Can Lead Ford Cars to Surge out of Control

The larger recalls involving Hyundai and Kia present some serious headaches for the Korean makers after repeated efforts to deal with the electronic control issues. The two makers operate in the U.S. as separate companies but share much of the same technology under the skin of their vehicles.

The largest announcement, involving 1.06 million Hyundai models, follows an earlier 2009 recall and three separate service actions addressing problems with taillight assemblies. Covered are the 2007 to 20009 Accent, 2007 to 2010 Elantra, 2010 to 2011 Genesis Coupe, 2007 to 2011 Santa Fe, 2011 Sonata, 2007 to 2009 Tucson and 2008 to 2009 Veracruz.

According to Hyundai, the ?condition could potentially result in intermittent operation of the push-button start feature, intermittent ability to remove the vehicle's shifter from the park position, illumination of the "ESC" (Electronic Stability Control) indicator lamp in the instrument cluster, intermittent interference with operation of the cruise control feature, or intermittent operation of the stop lamps."

The Detroit Bureau: VW Golf Named World Car of the Year

A total of 623,000 Kia models are impacted by the same problem, and include the 2007 to 2010 Rondo, the 2007 Sedona, 2011 Optima, 2007 to 2011 Sorento, 2010 and 2011 Soul, and the 2007 to 2010 Sportage.

A third recall by Hyundai specifically targets potential airbag problems involving 190,000 compact Elantra sedans sold during the 2011 to 2013 model-years. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration pressed the maker to act after receiving complaints that a support bracket can become displaced in the event of a crash that triggers the side-impact airbags.

The Detroit Bureau: First Look: New 2014 Acura MDX Crossover

NHTSA was first alerted to the problem when a passenger had serious lacerations to their ear during a crash. Hyundai has since found several vehicles that could experience the same sort of problem, apparently due to the installation of a special auto-dimming mirror offered as an option in the U.S. market.

Hyundai said the problem can be easily fixed. ?Industrial manufacturing adhesive strips placed over the bracket prevent displacement of a dislodged bracket during side curtain airbag deployment."

Repairs for all the new Hyundai and Kia recalls will be made at no charge to owners.

The three new recalls come just days after NHTSA announced it would begin a formal investigation of reports of excessive corrosion potentially impacting nearly 400,000 older Hyundai Sonata models. The rust issue could lead to failure of the rear suspension, the agency noted.

The Detroit Bureau: Chevy Delivers NY Auto Shows Big Surprise with Debut of Camaro Z/28

Corrosion is also being blamed for the recall of about 200,000 Subaru Legacy and Outback models produced between December 2003 and April 2009 and sold in 20 cold-weather states, as well as the District of Columbia.

Designated 2005 through 2009 model-years, the Legacy and Outback all-wheel-drive vehicles could experience break line cracks that could result in fluid leaks. That, in turn, might reduce brake functionality and lead to a crash.

Subaru also plans to notify owners and make repairs at no charge.

Investigational vaccine not effective in reducing post-operative staph infections

The JAMA Network Journals

Use of a vaccine to prevent Staphylococcus aureus infections among patients undergoing cardiothoracic surgery did not reduce the rate of serious postoperative S aureus infections compared with placebo and was associated with increased mortality among patients who developed S aureus infections, according to a study in the April 3 issue of JAMA.

Infections with S aureus following median sternotomy (incision through the midline of the sternum) cause substantial illness and death. "A safe vaccine that provides protection against a majority of S aureus strains during the postoperative period would address an important unmet medical need," according to background information in the article. A novel vaccine candidate (V710) is immunogenic and generally well tolerated in volunteers, with elevated antibody responses persisting for at least 1 year after vaccination in most patients.

Vance G. Fowler Jr., M.D., M.H.S., of Duke University Medical Center, Durham, N.C., and colleagues conducted a phase 2b/3 study to evaluate the efficacy and safety of preoperative V710 vaccination in preventing serious postoperative S aureus infection in patients undergoing cardiothoracic surgery. The randomized trial was conducted between December 2007 and August 2011 among 8,031 patients 18 years of age or older who were scheduled for full median sternotomy within 14 to 60 days of vaccination at 165 sites in 26 countries. Participants were randomly assigned to receive a single intramuscular injection of either V710 vaccine (n=4,015) or placebo (n=4,016).

The independent data monitoring committee recommended termination of the study after the second interim analysis because of safety concerns and low efficacy. In the primary modified intention-to-treat analysis, V710 vaccine was not significantly more efficacious than placebo in preventing the prespecified primary end point (S aureus bacteremia and/or deep sternal wound infection through postoperative day 90) (22 adjudicated cases in 3,528 evaluable V710 recipients vs. 27 adjudicated cases in 3,517 evaluable placebo recipients). No significant differences in efficacy between the vaccine and placebo groups were observed at any point during the study.

The researchers also found that the V710 vaccine was not significantly more efficacious than placebo in preventing the secondary end points (all S aureus surgical site and invasive infections through postoperative day 90).

Compared with placebo, the V710 vaccine was associated with more adverse experiences during the first 14 days after vaccination (30.8 percent vs. 21.8 percent), including injection site reactions (20.1 percent vs. 9.5 percent) and serious adverse events (1.7 percent vs. 1.3 percent), and a significantly higher rate of multiorgan failure during the entire study (31 vs. 17 events).

Although the overall incidence of vaccine-related serious adverse events (1 in each group) and the all-cause mortality rate (201/3,958 vs. 177/3,967) were not statistically different between groups, the mortality rate in patients with staphylococcal infections was significantly higher among V710 vaccine than placebo recipients (15/73 vs. 4/96).

"In our study of adult patients undergoing cardiothoracic surgery, preoperative vaccination with V710 did not significantly reduce the composite incidence of S aureus bacteremia and deep sternal wound infection," the authors write. "These findings do not support the use of the V710 vaccine for patients undergoing surgical interventions."

Preeti N. Malani, M.D., M.S.J., of the University of Michigan Health System, Ann Arbor, Mich., (and Contributing Editor, JAMA), comments on the findings of this study in an accompanying editorial.

"While the prevention of S aureus infections should remain a priority for future investigation, novel approaches must move beyond vaccine strategiesand for that matter, beyond S aureus. Even if a viable staphylococcal vaccine were to be developed, this would not address non-S aureus infections. Burgeoning antimicrobial resistance results in an urgent, worldwide public health mandate. Progress in this arena will require expansion of preventive efforts and interventions that cover all organisms."

Nelson Mandela still suffering from fluid buildup in lungs

The 94-year-old former president of South Africa was hospitalized nearly a week ago for a recurrence of pneumonia. NBC's Brian Williams reports.

By Alastair Jamieson, NBC News

Nelson Mandela continues to experience a problem with fluid buildup in his lungs and is being treated for pneumonia with oral medication, sources told NBC News on Tuesday.

The 94-year-old human-rights icon and former South Africa president was admitted to hospital late on Wednesday after the recurrence of a lung infection that has dogged him since December.

However, a South African government spokesman denied the report that fluid buildup continues to be a problem, saying the former president is breathing without difficult after being treated.

Earlier, relatives visited the anti-apartheid campaigner in the hospital, the country?s presidency said.

A?statement, issued Monday,?said there had been ?no significant change in his condition? since Sunday night.

?He spent part of Family Day [a public holiday in South Africa] today with some members of his family, who appreciate the support they have been receiving from the public,? it added.

NBC News health expert Dr. Nancy Snyderman said pneumonia and fluid buildup in the lungs was a common problem in those of Mandela?s age.

She added that the tuberculosis Mandela suffered during his imprisonment was significant.

?It means his lungs are scarred, less spongy and absorbent, and therefore less able to rid themselves of fluid,? she said.

NBC News' Charlayne Hunter-Gault contributed to this report.
