More powerful electric cars: Mechanism behind capacitor's high-speed energy storage discovered
ScienceDaily (Feb. 23, 2012) ? Researchers at North Carolina State University have discovered the means by which a polymer known as PVDF enables capacitors to store and release large amounts of energy quickly. Their findings could lead to much more powerful and efficient electric cars.
Capacitors are like batteries in that they store and release energy. However, capacitors use separated electrical charges, rather than chemical reactions, to store energy. The charged particles enable energy to be stored and released very quickly. Imagine an electric vehicle that can accelerate from zero to 60 miles per hour at the same rate as a gasoline-powered sports car. There are no batteries that can power that type of acceleration because they release their energy too slowly. Capacitors, however, could be up to the job -- if they contained the right materials.
NC State physicist Dr. Vivek Ranjan had previously found that capacitors which contained the polymer polyvinylidene fluoride, or PVDF, in combination with another polymer called CTFE, were able to store up to seven times more energy than those currently in use.
"We knew that this material makes an efficient capacitor, but wanted to understand the mechanism behind its storage capabilities," Ranjan says.
In research published in Physical Review Letters, Ranjan, fellow NC State physicist Dr. Jerzy Bernholc and Dr. Marco Buongiorno-Nardelli from the University of North Texas, did computer simulations to see how the atomic structure within the polymer changed when an electric field was applied. Applying an electric field to the polymer causes atoms within it to polarize, which enables the capacitor to store and release energy quickly. They found that when an electrical field was applied to the PVDF mixture, the atoms performed a synchronized dance, flipping from a non-polar to a polar state simultaneously, and requiring a very small electrical charge to do so.
"Usually when materials change from a polar to non-polar state it's a chain reaction -- starting in one place and then moving outward," Ranjan explains. "In terms of creating an efficient capacitor, this type of movement doesn't work well -- it requires a large amount of energy to get the atoms to switch phases, and you don't get out much more energy than you put into the system.
"In the case of the PVDF mixture, the atoms change their state all at once, which means that you get a large amount of energy out of the system at very little cost in terms of what you need to put into it. Hopefully these findings will bring us even closer to developing capacitors that will give electric vehicles the same acceleration capabilities as gasoline engines."

'Mirror Mirror' Star Lily Collins Leads An Enchanted Tour

When "Mirror Mirror" hits theaters March 30, moviegoers will be transported to an enchanted land of snowy forests, old-timey villages and lavish castles for a classic retelling of the Snow White fairy tale. But why wait that long when you can get a sneak peek behind the scenes right now?
MTV News' own Josh Horowitz was lucky enough to visit the "Mirror Mirror" set and received a guided tour from Snow White herself, Lily Collins.
"This is where I live," Collins declared while welcoming MTV News to the snowy forest set of the film. She was quick to caution that, unlike real snow, the white stuff piled throughout the woods wasn't exactly appetizing. "It's salt," she warned.
"This is the forest as you can see, obviously. The dwarves' tree house is somewhere in these woods. The majority of the action takes place here," Collins explained. "And I'm in big ball gowns running around in this wood. I'm fighting with Armie [Hammer]."
From the forest, Collins took MTV News to another soundstage, where a dilapidated village was constructed. The place was in disrepair — and, of course, it was all Julia Roberts' fault. "It has seen better days, yes," Collins told MTV News. "The story is that the queen [Roberts] has spent all the money, and so the village is poor."
Next, the 22-year-old "Abduction" actress introduced Josh to the dwarves' cottage, which features several small beds and a shorter-than-usual kitchen table.
"This is the classic, iconic dwarves' house, as you can tell by the little things around. So much goes on in this house," the actress said. "Everything from the iconic waking up scene with the dwarves and I [to] Armie — imagine Armie, how tall he is, he is in here quite a bit."
The lovely actress even invited Josh to stay in the cottage. "Don't you want to stay? Take a little bed up there?" she asked. Alas, none of the beds built for the seven dwarves would be a good fit and Collins knows it, having given them a go herself. "I tried fitting in one of those too; they're really small," she admitted.

Rick Santorum Contraception Stance Remains Out Of Step With ...
WASHINGTON ? Most Americans don't share Rick Santorum's absolutist take on abortion. He's out of step on women in combat. He questions the values of the two-thirds of mothers who work. He's even troubled by something as commonplace as birth control ? for married couples.
Even among a Republican presidential field eager to please religious conservatives, Santorum's ideas stand out.
A Catholic father of seven whose kids are home-schooled, Santorum may seem to wear his conservatism as comfortably as his sweater vests. But he's walked a careful path, keeping the more provocative opinions that helped sink his re-election to the Senate in 2006 mostly out of his presidential campaign.
That is until he leaped to the top of the polls, alongside Mitt Romney.
Now Santorum's record on social issues is getting a closer look. On several matters, he's outside the Republican mainstream. And if he becomes the GOP nominee, some of his ideas would probably be surprising, even puzzling, to general election voters.
BIRTH CONTROL
_ Santorum: Says he wouldn't try to take away the pill or condoms. But he believes states should be free to ban them if they want. He argues that the Supreme Court erred when it ruled in 1965 that married Americans have a right to privacy that includes the use of contraceptives.
Birth control, even within marriage, violates his beliefs as a Roman Catholic. Last year Santorum told the Christian blog Caffeinated Thoughts that as president he would warn the nation about "the dangers of contraception" and the permissive culture it encourages. "Many of Christian faith have said, `Well, that's OK. Contraception is OK,'" he said. "It's not OK. It's a license to do things in the sexual realm that is counter to how things are supposed to be. ... If it's not for purposes of procreation, then you diminish this very special bond between men and women."
On Friday Santorum told "CBS This Morning" that as a senator he supported federal money for birth control services but he also wants to promote abstinence "as a healthier alternative."
_ Catholics: Despite the church's teachings, 84 percent of U.S. Catholics believe a person who uses artificial birth control can still be a good Catholic, according to a CBS News poll. And 89 percent of Catholic women favor expanding access to birth control for those who can't afford it, the nonpartisan Public Religion Research Institute found.
_ All Americans: Almost all say contraception is OK. Three-fourths of U.S. women have taken the pill, the CBS News poll says, and other studies show nearly all sexually active women have used some type of birth control. A mere 8 percent of Americans think birth control is morally wrong, according to a Pew Research Center poll this month. Four in 10 say it's not even a moral issue these days.
WORKING WOMEN
_ Santorum: His 2005 book, "It Takes a Family: Conservatism and the Common Good," suggests parents in two-income families aren't doing what's best for the kids. Too often, he writes, both parents work when the family could get by on one salary: "For some parents, the purported need to provide things for their children simply provides a convenient rationalization for pursuing a gratifying career outside the home." He described it as a sad situation created by "radical feminists" who undermined the traditional family by "convincing women that professional accomplishments are the key to happiness."
Santorum's unsuccessful re-election bid took a hit from a rival's TV ad featuring a working mother challenging the senator "to come to my house at the end of the month when we're doing our bills and tell me how we can live on one income." Santorum recently tried to deflect questions about the book by saying that his wife, who left her nursing career to care for their children, helped write that section because she felt her decision to become a stay-at-home mom wasn't valued by society. He predicted a Santorum administration would have "plenty of working moms."
_ All Americans: Two-thirds of married mothers are working or looking for jobs, according to the Labor Department. Like Santorum, most Americans don't think it's best for children when moms work full time; they're divided over whether staying at home or working part time is ideal. But more moms are working for economic reasons than personal satisfaction. Half of full-time working mothers would rather work part time, and a third would prefer to stay home, according to a 2009 Pew Research Center poll. Only about 1 in 10 of the moms working full-time says it's an ideal situation.
WOMEN IN COMBAT
_ Santorum: Spoke out against women in combat when the Pentagon announced plans to allow them to serve closer to the front. He says he worries that fighting men will be distracted by their "natural instinct" to protect women. He also says the differences in physical abilities between men and women aren't being taken into account.
_ Republicans: Six in 10 would allow women to serve in units that engage in close combat; about a third are opposed, a Quinnipiac University poll last year found.
_ All Americans: Slightly more favorable toward women in combat than Republicans.
GAYS IN THE MILITARY
_ Santorum: Wants to reinstate the "don't ask, don't tell" policy that banned openly gay service members. In a GOP debate in Florida, Santorum said lifting the ban was social engineering and "sexual activity has absolutely no place in the military." He added: "Keep it to yourself whether you're a heterosexual or a homosexual."
_ Republicans: Santorum's party is divided on the issue. A CBS News poll gave a 48-41 edge to supporters of gays serving openly in the military. Republicans who felt strongly about the issue were twice as likely to support gays in the military than to oppose them, however.
_ All Americans: A big majority ? 68 percent ? favor allowing gays to serve openly, the same poll found.
ABORTION
_ Santorum: Favors amending the Constitution to ban abortion. He says that human life begins at conception and doctors who perform abortions should be charged as criminals. In his book, he compared women who have abortions to 19th-century slaveholders, writing that "unlike abortion today, in most states even the slaveholder did not have the unlimited right to kill his slave." In the past, Santorum supported allowing abortions in cases of rape or incest, but he now says no to those exceptions.
_ Republicans: Although united in the belief that abortion should be illegal in most cases ? two-thirds say so ? an overwhelming majority of Republicans are willing to make some exceptions. Only a fifth say abortion should always be illegal, according to AP-GfK polling in August.
_ All Americans: Even less likely to say there should be no abortions at all ? 16 percent support a total ban. About half of Americans want abortion to be legal in most cases, and almost as many say it should be mostly illegal.

U.S. activists face possible prison in Egypt, leaders say (Reuters)
WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? U.S. pro-democracy activists face the prospect of imprisonment in Egypt as a result of false accusations made against them there, their leaders told Congress on Thursday.
In prepared testimony about the case that has strained ties between Washington and Cairo, the presidents of the U.S. democracy-building organizations whose staff have been charged in Egypt denied that they had done anything illegal or improper.
They said the crackdown on civil society groups was a clear attempt by Egypt's military rulers to derail democracy, with the main public accuser -- Minister of International Cooperation Faiza Abul Naga -- a holdover from the era of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.
Mubarak was overthrown last year in a popular uprising. The army has managed Egypt since then but pledged to hand power to an elected president by the middle of this year.
"Trial with the possibility of prison time for our staff appears the most likely outcome at present," Lorne Craner, president of the International Republican Institute, told the House Foreign Affairs Committee in prepared testimony.
IRI's Egypt director, Sam LaHood, the son of the U.S. transportation secretary, is one of the Americans caught up in the investigation.
Charges have been brought against 43 foreign and Egyptian activists after investigators swooped down on the offices of civil society groups on December 29, confiscating computers and other equipment and seizing cash and documents.
Around 20 of those charged are Americans, and they have been banned from leaving Egypt. Some have taken refuge in the U.S. Embassy.
The American groups raided were the IRI and the National Democratic Institute, both democracy-building groups loosely affiliated with the U.S. political parties, as well as the human rights group Freedom House, and the International Center for Journalists.
The charges include allegations that the activists were working for organizations not legally registered in Egypt. The groups say they have long sought to register there.
They are also alleged to have broken the law by accepting foreign funds -- grant money from the U.S. government -- without Egyptian government approval.
The Egyptian government says the issue is a matter of law, not politics. But in Washington, both Congress and the administration of President Barack Obama have said the probe threatens an annual $1.3 billion in U.S. military aid to Egypt.
The December 29 assault by Egyptian security forces was unprecedented, said David Kramer, president of Freedom House.
"Not even under Hosni Mubarak did we and our partners face such attacks," he said. "No where else in the world has any of our offices been treated as they are in Egypt."
"Despite promises made by Egyptian authorities to the highest levels of the U.S. government, we remain closed, our computers, files and cash still in the possession of the Ministry of Justice, and our staffs face hostile interrogations by investigating judges, and now the prospect of arrest and imprisonment," Kramer said.
Ken Wollack, president of the National Democratic Institute, said Egyptian media had reported a number of false and misleading accusations.
He said NDI had never trained or funded protest movements, never funded political parties, and never supported a particular outcome in any election.
"Our goal is to support a transparent, democratic process that gives people the freedom to make choices," Wollack said.
Of the 10 organizations raided on December 29, five were foreign (the four U.S. groups plus the Konrad Adenauer Foundation of Germany) and five were Egyptian, Freedom House's Kramer said.
He said some additional 400 Egyptian non-governmental organizations have been under investigation and face "relentless" pressure from the government.
"The crackdown on civil society represents a clear effort to block a democratic transition in Egypt," Kramer said. "Essentially, in the minds of many Egyptians, the military has hijacked the revolution and what it represented."
The Egyptian minister, Abul Naga, had sought full control over funding for all non-military aid going to Egypt, and resented the decision by the Obama administration last year to shift nearly $20 million directly to IRI and NDI for the purposes of helping Egypt with its elections, Kramer said.
He said Washington should immediately end any relationship with her ministry because she "has lost all credibility to handle any U.S. assistance funds in a constructive or accountable manner."

Sergio Mendes gets "Real" about Oscar race (Reuters)
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? At age 71, in a long career with a string of hit songs and movie music behind him, one might think legendary Brazilian composer Sergio Mendes has it all, but he's missing one thing: an Oscar. This year, he might just take one home.
Mendes' song "Real in Rio," which he wrote for animated movie "Rio," has been nominated for one of the film industry's top honors, and odds are good he could win on February 26 when the honors are given out because his category includes only one other entry.
The morning nominations were announced in January, Mendes was awakened by a call from the movie's director, Carlos Saldahna, asking him if he had his tuxedo pressed and ready.
"I couldn't believe it," said Mendes. "I'm still kind of pinching myself. What a wonderful moment of my life."
Mendes has numerous wonderful events to look back on. As a young musician he worked the clubs of Rio de Janeiro and was mentored by the legendary Antonio Carlos Jobim. Later mentors included Herb Alpert who signed Mendes to A&M records.
But writing "Real in Rio" was a special experience for the native of the Brazilian city known for its nightlife, beaches and buoyant human spirit. He said he felt honored to work on it.
"They asked me to write a song that would open the movie," said Mendes. "It kind of goes through the whole movie and at the end it explodes in the Carnival parade. So that's 'Real in Rio."
Mendes moved to the United States in the early 1960s and recorded some music, but it wasn't until he teamed up with star musician Alpert that Mendes' career took off. His first big album was "Herb Alpert Presents Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66," which featured the hit single "Mas Que Nada."
"He was not only a mentor, he was a friend. I worship his music still today," Mendes said about Alpert, recalling "the way he approached the harmonies, his voicings, the orchestration."
KEEPING IT FRESH
"Mas Que Nada," which means more than nothing, was the first Brazilian song in Portuguese to become a smash hit all over the world, he said. He reinterpreted it in a 2006 collaboration with Will.i.am of Black-Eyed Peas, who produced Mendes' "Timeless."
"If you do the song in a totally different way than I did in '66, I enjoyed doing that," said Mendes. "This was a whole new generation that never heard that song in the '60s and they were introducing it as a brand new song."
After "Mas Que Nada" came other hits such as "Fool on the Hill" and "Look of Love," and Brasil '66 began touring with Alpert and his Tijuana Brass, which Mendes proudly notes was "the hottest instrumental band in the world" at the time.
Despite over 50 years in music, Mendes hasn't lost his love of performing. Celebrating his 71st birthday last week, he played "Fool on the Hill" at an event honoring Paul McCartney.
At the Oscars, "Real in Rio" is competing against only "Man or Muppet" by Bret McKenzie from "The Muppets." And while the odds of winning are 50/50, Mendes, a veteran of awards shows, knows anything can happen.
"I'm going to be praying," Mendes said.
The lack of many nominees results from recent changes designed to counter criticism too subpar songs were being nominated. As a result, songs from the likes of Madonna, Elton John, Elvis Costello, Alan Menken and Mary J. Blige were overlooked, prompting some criticism within the industry.
But Mendes said he didn't know much about the rules or changes, commenting only that "I wish it would be more songs."
Mendes did lament the fact that Oscar organizers have decided not to include musical performances in the awards' TV broadcast. "It's such a happy song," he said of "Real in Rio." "It would be a really incredible vibe for everybody."

US cites concern that Iran, Russia arming Syria
WASHINGTON (AP) ? A State Department official says Iran and Russia are providing weapons to Syria that could be used against anti-government protesters.
Thomas A. Countryman, the department's assistant secretary for international security and nonproliferation, told reporters Wednesday that Iranian weapon shipments are a matter of deep concern for the Obama administration.
Countryman declined to provide specifics about the kinds of weapons provided to Syria by either Iran or Russia.
He also said the U.S. is concerned about the status of chemical weapons and portable anti-aircraft weapons in Syria, in light of the civil conflict there. He said the U.S. is open to working with a successor Syrian government to account for and destroy those weapons.
